Per AdviceToWriters, Jane Smiley, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, advised budding writers to take a minimalistic approach to writing, which is to simply write "only one word at a time", which will, with some passion-fueled grit, eventually develop into sentences, paragraphs, pages, and a book(s). Smiley reportedly advised:
Writing is only one word at a time. It’s not a whole bunch of things happening at once. Various things can present themselves, but when you face the page, it’s a couple of words, and then a couple more words, and [...] a sentence or a paragraph [...] when I look at writing, it’s all just one word at a time.
